Simple 2-Color Earflap Hat Pattern Please do not sell this pattern or claim it as your own.

You are welcome to sell items you make from this pattern.

Supplies:

  • Worsted weight yarn (about 125 grams) in main color
  • Worsted weight scraps of contrasting color
  • 5 mm hook (H/8)
  • Large-eye, blunt end needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Main Hat:

Round 1: Working in main color, make a magic ring and sc 6. Pull tail to tighten and trim tail.
DO NOT JOIN, place marker and move up after each round. (6)

Round 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around. (12)

Round 3: 1 hdc in stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat around. (18)

Round 4: 1 hdc in next 2 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat around. (24)

Round 5 and on: Remove marker, 1 hdc in next 3 stitches, 2 hdc in next stitch. Repeat around until hat reaches about 5 1⁄2” – 6” in diameter when laying flat.

Once the hat reaches the desired diameter, continue with 1 hdc in each stitch around until hat reaches approximately 6 1⁄2” in length when folded in half (measure from top to bottom rows). DO NOT FINISH OFF.

Earflaps:

Row 1: Ch 2 and turn. 1 hdc in each stitch around until there is a 6” space between the start of
the row and your current stitch. This will be the space for the face.

Rows 2-5: Ch 2 and turn. 1 hdc in each stitch across the row. DO NOT FINISH OFF.

Row 6-11: Ch 2 and turn, hdc in the next 14 stitches. (14)

Row 12: Ch 2 and turn, hdc in next 5, decrease for 2 stitches, hdc next 5. (12)

Row 13: Ch 2 and turn, hdc across. (12)

Row 14: Ch 2 and turn, hdc in next 4, decrease for 2 stitches, hdc in next 4. (10)

Row 15: Ch 2 and turn, hdc across. (10)

Row 16: Ch 2 and turn, hdc in next 3, decrease for 2 stitches, hdc in next 3. (8)

Row 17: Ch 2 and turn, hdc in next 2, decrease for 2 stitches, hdc in next 2. FINISH OFF. (6)

Begin the other earflap by joining the main color yarn to the start of the face gap on the other side. Follow the same pattern from row 6. Join your contrasting color and slipstitch into each stitch around. Add tassels or ties to the bottom of the earflaps as desired.
